72% of Aussies not ‘engaged’ at work

unhappyA recent Gallup study indicates that 21% of Australians are ‘actively disengaged’ from their jobs, and a further 61% are ‘not engaged’.  That equates to a significant amount of job dissatisfaction out there in Australian society!

It can’t be enjoyable to work for an organisation when only 18% of your fellow staff actually want to be there. That means in an SME of 20 staff, only 4 people (rounded up from 3.6) actually enjoy working there. The rest want out. Frightening statistics indeed.

The report was cited on Philip Tusing’s Destination Talent blog and the full PDF presentation can be downloaded here…

What is the cause of this dissatisfaction?  Poor leadership and management, a general malaise/discontentedness in society or the individual’s lack of drive to forge their own destiny?  A combination of all?
